Obama’s proposal for a free community college plan aired through a video on youtube and stirred controversy in America. Through his proposal, 9 million Americans could attend community college for a free two years tuition. This would apply for anyone who plans to attend school at least half-time, maintains a C+ average and stays on track to complete their program, or transfers to a four-year school.
Through this idea the opportunity of attending college is given to many students who didn’t have it before. Community college may not be everyone’s ideal plan but its an opportunity to start and its overrules not continuing an education. Here in Northwest Arkansas, college is close to home and easily accessible to the future springdale school district alumnies. Students who haven’t thought about college would have the opportunity right in front of them. Financial aid would be provided if necessary. Pell grants would help pay transportation, room, board, and any other cost associated with attending college. State and local government would dedicate more resources to helping students get a college degree. Students that start at community colleges during those 2 years, then go to a four-year institution would essentially get the first half of their bachelor’s degree for free. They would also benefit with free tuition, improved coordination between community college and public four-year schools.
Although this idea comes with many benefits, there would be complications coming with it. The federal government would pay 75% of the cost while participating states would pick up the remaining 25%. Of course that 25% has to come out of someplace which will most likely be us, the taxpayers. This might cause chaos and budgets might have to be modified, but the outcome will be more beneficial. This will dedicate some $60 billion over the next decade to defray tuition and fees. With this plan, we could boost college enrollment and slow the growth of student debt. Even if the proposal is not passed by 2017 future democratic leaders would likely embrace the plan to aid students and families. Although this plan will do nothing for existing students, it will benefit future college alumnies. Overall, the proposal for free two year community college is an opportunity we should take.
