The true meaning of Christmas.
No one can say for certain what that is, and I believe that everyone has their own interpretation of it. Everyone has their own distinct holiday traditions, but the smallest things that make this joyous season so special are the ones we seem to forget about the most.
To many, Christmas is a day all about what you receive, where gifts are exchanged left and right, and the only important thing is knowing that you got what you so desperately requested for. Today’s society has completely warped Christmas into such an utmost false interpretation.
People seem to believe that the bigger the buck spent on presents, the better. Sadly but truly, gifts have become the poster child for Christmas. Kids are raised on the sole belief that the holiday revolves around Santa, his elves, and rudolph guiding the sleigh.
There’s nothing wrong with the traditional tales that help make this day even more merrier than it already is, but when these things overpower the true meaning of Christmas, that’s when people really do forget what Christmas is all about.
In reality, Christmas is truly the celebration of the birth of Jesus Christ, and to believers of Jesus Christ, the holiday is so much more than a trading of eye catching, materialistic items. Don’t get me wrong, I love a good present just as much as any typical girl would, but even I know there’s a time and place for that. The one day a year where everyone seems to be largely closer than ever should be spent much differently than only continually tearing wrapping paper off.
December 25th is no doubt a day of remembrance, but the brightest and merriest day of the year is also about those around us. We’re all here for one purpose, and on the most important day of the year, we’re called to celebrate it amongst one another. That’s why we give gifts in the first place: not to take in all we possibly can, but to share our thankfulness for, and with one another.
The delicious feasts, beautifully lighted trees, and classic Santa stories are all incredibly sublime, but even they can’t mask Christmas for what it truly is. Being content and lighthearted with everyone around us is something that’s worth a monumental celebration.
We have no one to thank except our Lord and savior for that, and no day is greater to do that on than his very own birthday. The holidays are undoubtedly the most wonderful time of the year, just make sure you always remember the real reason why.
