The DREAM Act is a legislation that would allow exceptional children of illegal immigrants to pursue a higher education or obtain a career in the armed forces. A form of the act was first proposed to Congress in the mid-200s and is still awaiting approval.
The act, whose name is an acronym for Development, Relief and Education for Alien Minors, would be extremely advantageous to the welfare of our nation. If passed, the act allow bright students who are currently debilitated by their illegal status to successfully develop into vital members of society by utilizing the enormous amount of potential they possess.
Not only would the act benefit eligible students, it would enhance the nation as a whole. With access to higher education, students will be able to contribute variety, inventiveness, and reliability to society. The country will also prosper economically from the act.
According to the Congressional Budget Office, the DREAM Act had to ability to reduce the deficit by $1.4 billion and increase government income by $2.3 billion over the next ten years. Also, because the students would become legal citizens, they would be contributing a substantial amount of taxable profit to the nation’s economy.
On the other side of the argument, assailants of the act claim that if the legislation was to pass, illegal immigration would be deemed as excusable and would even encourage an influx of illegal aliens in the country.
However, after gaining understanding of the benefits of the act, these claims seem to be ludicrous. These students are not illegal by their own admission and should not have to suffer undeserved consequences. Also, the strict eligibility requirements outlined by the act would only allow the most motivated and bright students to benefit.
In a country where immigration is a prevalent issue, legislation like the DREAM Act is worthy to be put into action.
