Why should students have to pay for parking tags? It’s not fair to the students who drive cars to school to have to buy a parking tag. Who wants to pay just to drive to school?
Students who don’t want to pay have few alternatives. They could get a ride, but whomever drives has to have a parking tag on his or her car. Someone had to pay. Some can’t get rides from friends. Some parents can’t get their kids to school and then get to their job on time.
Kids could also ride the bus, but many kids don’t want to. Students could walk or ride a bike to school. The obvious problem is the weather, which makes it miserable for those kids.
Taxes pay for education, why not the parking too?
According to bookkeeper Cindy Fitzgerald, she says that 456 parking tags have been sold at $15, which is nearly $6,900. The money goes toward operating school expenses and for permit purchases, she said.
But, there is an incentive in place. On the EOC if you get a proficient, you get half off, but for an advanced score you get the tag for free.
The potential concern could be that people who don’t attend the school might misuse the parking lot or trespass. Our school resource officer could address this concern by patroling the lot or the school could have security cameras installed in the lot. Or the school could communicate to the students better about where the money goes.
