According to familyplanning.com, over 1,000 teens in 2008 became pregnant and the number increases each year. Coming to school and finishing school would be so much easier on the teen and the parents if Har-Ber had a preschool or child care facility.
The preschool would help them get caught back up in school. Normally when the teen moms have their babies, they are out of school for months. If our school was to have a preschool, then their absenteeism would decrease.
Statistics from BabyCenter.com stated that over 70 percent of the teens have dropped out of high school and didn’t further their education. The average rate of child care a year ranges from over $11,000 to $972 a month.
This program would lower the stress level on the teen mom’s parents because they wouldn’t be worrying so much if their daughter was going to graduate or to advance to the next grade level. Teen moms could come to school and get caught back up.
Having a baby is a responsibility. I believe teen pregnancy is preventable, but having a preschool available at school would help.
Many teen mom’s struggle financially or rely on the support of their parents. The preschool would financially benefit the teen mom’s and provide opportunities for other students to learn about child care. Perhaps, even, the care could be free to teen mom’s or at least reduced to a reasonable cost.
Additionally, teen moms wouldn’t have to worry about taking the baby to and from school before their own school starts. You would just have to go to your school and drop the baby off. This child care could also be available for the teachers. While the cost of maintaining a child care facility on campus may be high, one of the purposes of school is to help meet the needs of its students. Having a preschool or child care facility available would benefit both students and teachers alike.
