After raiding his family’s pantry and scrounging up a few dollars, sophomore Adrian Gonzalez heads to school with a bag of cans. Those cans will end up in Wooten’s Food Drive that helps local kids eat during the holiday season. Gonzalez can hand it the cans during class knowing he has done something to help someone in need.

“I hope it’s a successful charity. I’m going to donate as much as I can to give back to the community. I think it’s great charity that everyone should donate to,” Gonzalez said.

Wootens Helping Hands has been a long running charity at Har-Ber High School. The foundation’s mission is to put food on the tables of local families in need, and especially kids who struggle to eat at home. It is a very important local charity that is simple and gives back to the local community if you choose to donate. Canned foods can be very cheap, so donating just a few cans won’t cost all that much.

“I think people tend to forget about those that are less fortunate. The food drive helps remind us that we need to give to others. Not only does it make us feel better for giving, but it also makes the less fortunate happy about receiving,” junior Valeria Terrazas said.

Every year, Wooten’s brings in thousands of cans for the community, which are all donated from students and faculty. The drive becomes very important for students who get most of their meals during school. During the holiday breaks, these students can not eat at school.

“It’s important for everyone to give to each other as the Lord has given us already. Not everybody gets to sit down with their family during the holidays and enjoy a nice hot meal. Wootens helps those in need. We are all one student body, unified under our savior Jesus Christ, and if he were here today, he would want us to help others and give back,” junior Katelyn Capdeville said.

If you want to donate to the cause, simply ask your teacher and they will take cans from you to donate. Just drop them off before November 14th. Items that you can donate include soup, bags of beans, pasta, pasta sauce, corn bread, canned fruit, and any other canned foods you might have. This holiday season, assist the school in helping the community by donating food for those who can not afford their own meals.
