During the Springdale vs. Har-Ber football game, baby powder was tossed into the air, creating a cloud of white above the fans. Students in the student section were warned about inappropriate behavior. Students are expected to be involved in school activities and know what rules to follow for a great experience at future football games.
The student group, P.A.W.S. stands for Proud Active Wildcat Seniors, which includes current seniors who are figuring out ways to get people involved and still follow the Arkansas Activities Association rules.
“We meet once a month now, but we are trying to get up to three meetings a month,” said P.A.W.S.President Michelle Rodriguez. “We depend on people to step up. We are working an in-school charity to help our fellow students.”
Besides in-school meetings, P.A.W.S. organizes the student section at football games.
According to Rodriguez, “some rules are fair, but we wish to be more free.”
Senior assistant principal and former coach Aaron Harris is often present on the sidelines at the football games and is responsible for monitoring the behavior of those students in the student section.
“AAA consists of two tiers which all schools abide by, and the 7A West has set up additional rules,” said Mr. Harris.
The basic philosophy of the AAA is “fans are not at a ball game to ridicule or intimidate the other teams or its fans, but to support and yell for their team and to enjoy watching skill and competition.”
The AAA wants to promote sportmanship.
“Sportsmanship is voted on at the end of the year. Which includes student section, administration, cheerleaders, and fans,” he said.
