In efforts to assist students who need additional help, Academic Thursdays started Sept. 8 during activity period. The piloted program was implemented by Assistant Principal Michael Shepher.
Students may be tutored in any subject, may take time to do make up work, or may work on presentations. Study sessions for the PSAT and the ACT will be held during this time.
Those students not receiving assistance will be required to stay in class and will continue to do some kind of academic studies.
“We are doing this because we recognize that many of our students are busy outside of school, and we are hoping that 30 minutes of class will help them get caught up in school and studying,” said Dr. Shepherd.
According to Dr. Shepherd, the program will be piloted for six months to monitor its effectiveness., At the end of six months, he and the teachers will evaluate the program and determine if they feel it is helping students.
Prior to Academic Thursdays, students were required to come in before or after school or during lunch for make-up work or to get extra help.
“I think it’s a waste of time, but I guess it’d be good for the people who need it,” said junior Sierra Vickers.
In order to utilize Academic Thursdays, students must present a note to their third period teacher. Students cannot leave class to go get the note. Students must request the pass in advance. Also, students must stay either in their third period class or the class to which they have a pass for the entire activity period.
Dr. Shepherd hopes that this program will enhance student scores and grades.
