East lab hosted Micayla Madness, a three on three basketball tournament April 17. Four East students, juniors Issac Herrera, Jimmy Donoghue, Tyler Dent, and sophomore Pierce Phillips put on the event.
Micayla Madness was put on in honor of former student Micayla Patterson, who passed away in Sept. 2010 from a car accident. All the proceeds from the event goes directly toward IChooseHope.org, a website created by Micayla’s mother, Becky Patterson, to honor Micayla’s memory.
“Micayla was really influenced by a summer camp in Colorado,” said Phillips. “So all the money that is fed into IChooseHope.org will send someone to camp in Colorado.”
The event brought in money from other sources beside students paying to participate.
“World Gym paid for Backyard Burgers to come during the tournament,” said Donoghue. “They gave us 100 percent of the profits that we made from the burgers.”
Micayla Madness recieved a lot of support from the school and the community.
“Mrs. Patterson was really excited about the event,” said Phillips. “Dr. Brackett was also really excited.”
The first team that made it to the finals was composed of the seniors Trent Tollet, Louis Pitts, Garrett Harper, and junior Travis Tollet. The second team in the finals is made up of seniors Zack Kifer, David Matthews, and junior Chad Ramey.
The final game was held Friday, April 22 during activity period. Students will be allowed to pay $1 to go view the game where the profits will also go toward IChooseHope.org
“We would really like to thank all of our sponsors for really making this all happen,” said East Lab coordinator Debra Lamb. “World Gym was a big help with the burgers and other businesses like Wal-Mart and Schlotzsky’s. We also thank our community partners Mrs. Becky Patterson and Coach Sandy Wright for really making this all happen.”
