Students from Mr. Lynn Noke’s AP Environmental Science class took a trip out to Waste Management’s Eco-Vista landfill in Tontitown Dec. 2. Upon arrival, they took a tour of the grounds around the landfill, accompanied by Manager Mr. Kirby Thompson.
Mr.Thompson discussed the workings of the landfill as well as the rules and regulations that go along with its operation. On the tour, students got the opportunity see the inside of the new methane power plant, which came online just this past November.
“Northwest Arkansas is in really good shape in terms of our waste management and our ability to generate electricity off of methane waste,” said Mr. Nokes.
For many students, this was an opportunity to learn more about where their trash ends up after it’s put in the trash can and taken away each week.
The only real complaint about the trip seemed to be about the temperature.
“It was so interesting and I learned a lot, but it was freezing,” said senior Jenny Collins.
Students spent about two hours at the landfill.
“It was an incredible field trip, lots of math, chemistry, biology, law, history, and opportunities to write. It was phenomenal to see the methane converted to electricity!” said Mr. Nokes.
