Virtual Art

Technology today is creating more opportunities for creativity to shine. Advances in technology have opened a new door to artists everywhere, expressing themselves through virtual reality;  a computer-generated simulation that produces real-life events using 3D technology. The app used is the Tilt Brush app, which allows you to paint in space.

Former animator for Disney, Glen Keane, walks into a world of endless creativity.

“When I animate, there is a frustration I have; I wish that the flatness of the paper would go away and that I could actually dive in,” said Keane in the short film.

Keane, along with the HTC Vive VR headset and the Tilt Brush app, steps into virtual reality to draw Beast from Beauty and the Beast. Keane draws Beast very large in size. Every stroke shows the motion of the drawing.

“I draw all the characters real life size. They are that size in my imagination,” said Keane in Step into the Page.

This creates a new doorway for artists to express themselves or even tell a story. As Keane draws in the short film, Step into the Page, his reaction to this new world bring him enjoyment. Even as an artist, you can feel the thrill he gets in watching the drawing he creates come to life. It is what all artists like to experience when drawing.

The evolution of technology is influencing artists to try new things. It’s stepped up the game for artists to go along with the technology movement.

Virtual reality is becoming a big thing, we are seeing it in video games, helping the military and even helping in the medical field. It makes us question what will be the downside to all these advances in technology.

The physical downfalls to virtual reality is cybersickness, also know as motion sickness. Along with time constraints of generating things in the virtual world.

With all the complications of rendering and making graphics look realistic, it will take a while to even be able to create a piece of art. It’s unique way of opening a new world can come with complications.

“Technology has created ways for us to go beyond our limits,” said senior Rio Pineda. “I think art in virtual reality will be impactful because it produces a 3D image that we can visually see from our minds by just a thought. I would use this because it allows me to express myself in many ways.”

Art tied with technology could be used in schools, since even today, schools are going toward using more technology. It could even create more jobs for artists in the future as technology evolves.

More jobs in the future are very beneficial since our generation has more imaginative minds. Nowadays, there isn’t much appreciation for art or artists. Technology can help bring art the appreciation it needs and it help bring better jobs for future artists.
