Bieber is back with a “Purpose”

Since his 2013 release of his album, Journals, Justin Bieber has been spending time “rebranding” himself. Comedy Roasts, donations to charities to appeal to his philanthropic side, as well as his popular Calvin Klein advertisement that caused chaos on social media across the board, have been leading up to his comeback album, Purpose, expected to be released on November 13.

The first single dropped over the summer as a complete surprise, named “Where Are Ü Now”.  Although this song only features Bieber, Diplo and Skrillex set the sound for a highly anticipated album. Skrillex and Diplo are also featured on Justin’s “What Do You Mean”.

Featuring Skrillex and Diplo on the single invites a larger crowd to appreciate the catchy tune. Even those who aren’t avid fans of Bieber have to admit to not immediately changing the radio station.

According to Billboard, Bieber’s first single from Purpose,  “What Do You Mean”, debuted at number one with promo from every celebrity known. This long list included powerful social media users such as Fifth Harmony, Ellen, and the Beckhams.

Big names in the industry will be featured on Bieber’s new album. Collaborators include Kanye West, Skrillex, Diplo, and Halsey. Ariana Grande also remixed “What Do You Mean” and is included on the official tracklist.

Bieber has released only two singles so far, his second one titled “Sorry,” an open letter to now ex-girlfriend Selena Gomez. From his two singles, listeners have picked up on his swirl of electronic influences and hints of his R&B roots in a sphere of teen pop.

Not only is November 13 a “Friday the 13th”, but One Direction’s “Made in the AM” is also set to release on the same day. The power of social media and fan dedication will definitely come into play to determine the artist with the larger number of downloads, streams, and trends on social media.

The British-Irish band are releasing a fifth album, the first since the departure of band member Zayn Malik before going on a well deserved hiatus. The One Direction boys have not gone the same lengths as Bieber in terms of promoting, but rather focusing on their evolving sound.

Bieber however, will likely top charts with his album considering the success he’s had with his first two singles and various name drops. Justin is transitioning from a problematic teen pop star to a mature young adult with a larger demographic.
