Fall brings flavorful drinks

Malorie Wiederkehr, Section editor

When fall comes around, we all become the highest level of basic. No one can deny it. The moment August turns to September, we start slipping on our long sweaters and scarfs, and start whipping out pumpkin spiced everything. But, the one thing fall can’t go without is seasonally themed drinks.

First up to bat is Onyx’s Mocha Havervest Latte, a seasonal coffee you can buy for $5.25. There are two sizes, 12oz and 16oz. You can also get it with or without mocha. All of the choices will cause the price to vary. The MHL, for short, is a rich blend that needs no extra sweetener. The taste is intensely creamy with a tang of pumpkin, flavored with what can only be described as fall. This drink is a wonderful option for those who don’t prefer the overwhelming taste of coffee.

Of course, a fall themed drink review wouldn’t be complete without the drink that started it all- Starbucks’s very own Pumpkin Spice Latte, popularly known as the PSL. This drink is revolutionary. One could say that this drink is what fuelled the craze of pumpkin spice scented everything. True, it did label any white girl within two meters of Starbucks “basic”, but is that really a bad thing? I decided that as a way to spice up this tasting by ordering an iced PSL. The infamous PSL comes in three sizes: tall, grande, and venti. I got a tall (12oz) iced PSL, which cost me a good $3.75. Of course, with each add-on and size, the price varies. Once you get the first taste of this drink, you instantly think, “Woah, this is great”, then five seconds later you get the aftertaste of chemicals. The PSL is an intensely sweet blend of artificial flavors that try to come off as pumpkin. The taste of coffee is barely even there- it’s basically all cream and sweetener. I will say that it’s actually pretty good for the first few sips, but after that, all I can do is force it down my throat so I’m not wasting my money.

What can be learned from my very unprofessional coffee taste testing is that you shouldn’t waste all your money on Pumpkin Spice Lattes. Try something new; there are bigger and better fall drinks out there.
